How to Factory Reset Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro

Before we get into resetting the AirPods, it is really important to know what happens when you do it. When the user resets the Apple earphones or any other bluetooth-based sound system, for that matter, the device and the earphones get unpaired. Once this happens, all connections on the AirPods get reset, making connecting with any devices that can support them easier.

Only after a reset will you be able to fix minor issues or give your bluetooth earphones to someone who wants to use them. If you suspect hardware damage inside the AirPods, shake it gently. If you hear any form of rattling noises, your AirPods might be damaged on the inside. A factory reset will not help you here.

Steps to Reset AirPods

  1. Place the AirPods in their charging case
  2. Unpair the AirPods
  3. Perform the Factory Reset
  4. Connect the AirPods to the host device

Resetting the AirPods and AirPods Pro

We have split the entire process into four easy steps to make this easier for you. Resetting both the AirPods and the AirPods Pro involves the same steps.

Place the AirPods in their charging case

The charging case is an ideal part of the AirPods or AirPods Pro earphones. This is something that comes with the earphones in the box. When the earphones are not in use, it is advisable to place them inside these cases so that they are safe and get charged while at it.

The first step for them is to place the earphones into the charging case. The case also has to be charged regularly, so make sure that the case is charged when you are about to reset it.

A charging case with a low charge may not efficiently reset the AirPods. This can also extend the small battery life of your AirPods.

Once the AirPods are in the case, close the AirPods case lid and place it aside for about a minute. We recommend doing this because if the earphones have low or no charge, they’ll get at least a little power boost when you set it aside for rest.

Unpair the AirPods

The next step here is to make your AirPods and Apple host devices disconnect. This could be an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or any other Apple device that is compatible enough to host AirPods.

  • Have your Apple smartphone handy when using AirPods. Open the charging case to allow your Apple device to detect them, then go to Settings.
  • Go to Bluetooth in Settings and look for your AirPods that are linked.
  • Select the blue I button, also known as the I button. Next to these, there’s further information.
  • Here. Select Forget This Device from the drop-down menu.
  • Confirm your selection, then place your Apple device and your AirPods far from each other after they are no longer linked.

Perform the Factory Reset

With no further delay, let us get into the actual resetting process. This is quite simple with the very detailed steps we have got for you below –

  • Open your AirPods’ charging case’s and let it remain that way.  Keep a watch on the indicator light.
  • Now find the setup button, that is generally placed at the back of your AirPods charging case. A tiny imprint marks the location of this little, round button at the back of your AirPods case.
  • Push the setup button and hold it down for a few seconds until you see the  throbbing white indication light on the charging case. You will not hear a click but you should be able to feel the button go inside, slightly.
  • You should see an flashing amber light for around 15 seconds before changing to white.

Note: For most AirPod models, this light is located on the front of the case, while it is located inside the charging case for the original generation. When active, you’ll see a green light blinking.

Connect the AirPods to the host device

The last step involved in the reset process is to connect the AirPods to the Apple device, that you placed at a distance from your AirPods.

  • You may now take your Apple smartphone and place it near your AirPods to reconnect them.
  • Keep the AirPods charging case lid open and wait for your Apple iPhone to restart the setup process.
  • You will be able to access the Bluetooth feature in the system settings menu. After that, you’re done with the setup and pairing.
  • You’ll be asked to go through an initialization process where you have to answer a few fundamental questions about the AirPods’ gesture & noise control buttons and the Siri AI assistant, and compatibility checks for AirPods Pro and other bluetooth-based accessories.

Once your Apple wireless earphones are back to the factory state, you can connect them with any device you want.

What should I do if I do not have an Apple device?

If you use your AirPods with an android device, the steps to reset the AirPods settings are the same. However, if you wish to connect the reset AirPods with your android phone or tablet, the interfaces are unique, which means that each phone has a different way to enable Bluetooth and connect with your AirPods. Most of the time, you will have to do this manually.

These are the steps to reset your Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro. These steps do not apply to the AirPods Max, considering that they have the over-ear design of a headphone.
